The Jewish population in Rome counts around 16-18.000 Jews.

Most of the Jewish population is divided in the area of Viale Marconi where mostly Roman jews live and in the area of Piazza Bologna where the Sephardic jews live.

In the area of the Ex-Ghetto Jewish life is still active with the Jewish school, the Great Synagogue and many Kosher places, but very few Jews live in this area.

Rome counts over ten shuls and tens of Kosher places.

There is no Eruv in Rome.

There are three areas that we advise you to stay:
1) Historic area where the Ghetto quarter is located with many Kosher restaurants and daily minyonim including the Great Synagogue of Rome.
2) Shopping area close to the Termini train station and Piazza Repubblica where there is a Ashkenazi shul with a Shacharit minyan.
3) Jewish area of Piazza Bologna where we are located, with shuls with daily minyonim, a Kosher bakery, restaurant and stores.

Shuls (Synagogues)
Weekday Shacharit is at 7:30 in almost all synagogues besidese the Spanish that starts at 7:00.
Weekday Mincha-Arvit is available at the Great Synagogue and at Beth El.
Friday night and Shabbat afternoon services are around candle lighting time.
Shabbat Shacharit is almost in all synagogues is at 9:30.

Accomodations
Free hospitality is not available, there are two options withing the Kosher hotels in Rome besides the traditional hotels:
Kosher Bed and Breakfast are usually located in one or more apartments within a building, these hotels usually have the bathroom in the room, provide a Kosher breakfast and provide ameneties for Shabbat.
There are also a number of Kosher families who rent out rooms in their house, the bathroom is not in the room.

Kosher Food in Rome
If you are looking for Mehadrin level there is just the restaurant Yotvata and the Shabbat meal caterings who could also cater during the week with advanced notice, all are under the Hashgacha of Rabbi Hazan (Chabad).

Pane al Pane uses all Chalav Israel cheese (Cholov Isroel milk is served on request).

There is no meat Glatt Kosher restaurant, all restaurants are under the Beth Din of Rome which is a reliable Hechsher but the Kelim are also used for non-Mehadrin poulty, non-Glatt meat and non-Cholov Isroel, please contact your rabbi to instruct you on this matter. Certain foods like deep fried and salads pose no problem. Some restaurant carry also Glatt meat.

The bread sold in non certified stores is usually not Kosher being that most bakeries use lard.

The milk could be considered Cholov Stam according to the Heter that just cow milk is used because of goverment regulations, the production of the brand Latte Sano was checked by the Beis Din of Rome.

Kosher gelato not-Cholov Isroel could be purchased at the Kosher Gelato shop.

Chol Hamoed Pesach the Jewish Community is organizing lunch from the 9th till the 12th of April from 12:45pm till 3:30 pm at the cost of 16 euro and supper on the 10th and 11th of April from 7:30pm till 10:30pm at the cost of 25 euro (16 euro for those under 13) at the Jewish School in the Ghetto quarter of Rome.
Reservations are appreciated and should be done through the Jewish Museum.

Mikvah in Rome
There are two womens mikvahs, an appointment is required.
There is no mikvah for men, but upon request the Mikvah could be opened for men.

Jewish Tours in Rome
Depending on your budget, we advise that you take a tour guide to learn about the history of Jewish Rome, there are two companies that provide group tours of different areas, each tour is approximatelly 3 hours and costs around €100 per person per tour, contact us if you want a private tour guide that charges per hour and could take you at your own pace.

Dress Code
To attend services and Shabbat meals the dress code should be smart casual or informal, no need of tie.

Directions from the airports
Fiumicino - Leonardo da Vinci airport (FCO)
Taxi or driver will charge between 40-50 euro.
The shuttle is 25 euro for the first person and 6 euro for each additional.
The train to Termini is 14 euro and to Tiburtina is 8 euro.
The bus goes to Piazza Cavour or Termini and is 8 euro.
